422 North Adams, southeast corner of North Adams and Eaton, with Bryan intersecting across Adams. Prior to 1875, it is unclear in the city directories what was on this property. In 1875, it is clearly the home of Gardner Barker and appears to remain the same building until at least 1915. The only time it was a legitimate hotel was from about 1899 to about 1901, when it was the Cottage Hotel. After that it became a boarding house or listed as furnished rooms. A new structure was built sometime between 1917 and 1925, which may be the building still standing.

1875 PCD:

Alpha – Gardiner T. Barker, proprietor Star Distillery, river bank foot of Lisk, resides 422 North Adams.

Alpha – Walter Barker, bookkeeper, distillery, foot Lisk, resides 422 North Adams.

 

The 1875 thru 1894 PCD's all provide that 422 North Adams was the home of Gardner Thurston Barker, who among many other things was the President of Commercial National Bank, the owner of several distilleries and served as Peoria mayor (three one-year terms in 1856, 1857 and 1862 and one two-year term in 1870.) Several directories previous to this show that he lived near Adams and Fayette, which is nearly two blocks from 422 North Adams. Barker died 10-26-1894 and the following year the home is listed to his widowed daughter and two of her children.
