Most city directories are divided into sections, as:
Alpha – An alphabetical list of all persons and businesses, with other information.
Street – A list of all streets, by address, and the occupant.
Business – A list of all businesses, sorted by business type, with other information.
Most city directories contain many typographical errors, which have been copied below as printed.
The City Hotel was a four-story building about five plots north of the southeast intersection of South Adams at Bridge (Franklin) Streets, on the river side of Adams. This may have also been the location of, but most likely in an older building, of Planters' House and Funke's Hotel. The City Hotel is no longer mentioned after the 1893 PCD and other buildings have sprouted up to the south of the property. The building most likely was demolished, circa 1892-1893.
The approximate location would be the buildings now using the addresses of 414 and 416 South Adams.

Biography, page 68:
“City Hotel:
H. S. DeVries is proprietor, and Herman DeVries clerk, of this popular hotel, which is located near the corner of Adams and Bridge streets. The building as a capacity to accommodate one hundred guests, and has good sample rooms on the first floor for commercial travelers' accommodations. Mr. DeVries prides himself on keeping the best $2 a day house in the State, and gives his patrons free transportation from and to the different depots. The City Hotel has long been well and favorably known to the traveling public, but its present proprietor is rapidly spreading its reputation for the better in every direction. Mr. DeVries has been two and a half years in possession of the house, and during that period has acquired an enviable reputation among hotel men for his skill exhibited in managing the hotel business. He contemplates enlarging his accommodations so as to be able to entertain double the present number of guests, and, were he able to quadruple the present capacity of the house, with his increasing popularity, the time would soon arrive when it would be necessary for the traveler desirous of stopping at the City Hotel to telegraph in advance for accommodations. Mr. DeVries employs twenty-five persons to assist him in making his patrons comfortable and giving his house a home-like appearance. Although quite a young man, Mr. DeVries has demonstrated to the public the fact that “he knows how to keep a hotel.” Give him a Call, and we venture to say you will not regret it.)”
