The 1902 Sanborn Fire Insurance Atlas map of the northeast corner of North Adams and Hamilton, shows a large, mostly vacant lot, with several small out buildings. There are no addresses on Adams, but 234 Hamilton is listed right at the corner edge of the lot.

 

The current Google Maps image shows the former Security Savings and Loan building, now owned by Caterpillar, at the corner, with parking to the north.

Biography on page 59: “The New Peoria House”

“This prominent hotel, Col. Charles H. Deane, proprietor, situatred on the corner of Adams and Hamilton streets, long known as the first hotel in the city, has been materially enlarged by the erection of a large addition to the building. The new dining room is to be 62 feet by 85 feet with a 20 feet ceiling, making one of the finest and most capacious dining rooms in the country. Thirty-one splendid new rooms, making in all 150 rooms in the building, have been added, and the sample room for commercial travelers will be the largest and most convenient in America. Col. Deane, the proprietor, is a gentleman well qualified for business and social intercourse, prompt, courteous and frank in his manner, he is therefore popular with his guests, and in connection with the fact that he keeps a first-class hotel, wins a large patronage, and is making money most largely. He is a man of great interprise, delights in advancement and the finer and extensive improvements, and is the hero of other laudable undertakings than her enumerated, as will be seen in an article elsewhere. But suffice it to say in this notice that the new Peoria House is the point to be made by the traveling public when visiting Peoria. Messrs. F. D. Hodges and M. Machenheimer are the clerks of this hotel, and are genial, accomodating gentlemen, efficient in the business, and add largely to the popularity of the house.”

HOTEL MAYER (AKA MAYER HOTEL) – 1906-1963

 

David M. Mayer, proprietor of the Mayer Office Building at 306 Hamilton and restaurants at 100 North Adams and 229 Main, is also listed as the proprietor of Mayer's European Hotel in 1904 and 1905. This hotel was supposedly located at the corner of Adams and Hamilton, while at the same time also listed at the offices at 306 Hamilton. Mayer opened the Hotel Mayer in 1906, at 200-212 North Adams and in 1912 and 1913 referred to it as “European.” I believe that after Mayer bought the property at 200-212 North Adams, he planned a hotel there and early on called it “Mayer's European Hotel” before it opened. Although mentioned in the 1904 and 1905 directories, I don't believe that hotel was ever in business, under that name. Sometime after 1960, the hotel was converted to apartments. In the early hours of February 14, 1963, the building was destroyed by fire, resulting in the deaths of four people.
